Apple’s Big Leap: ChatGPT and Advanced AI Could Be Coming to iOS 18

Apple Expected to Announce New AI Enhancements Including OpenAI ChatGPT Integration in iOS 18 - featured

Apple has its annual developer conference less than two weeks away, and rumors of OpenAI ChatGPT integration into iOS 18 are heating up.

Apple hopes to bring AI to its platforms sooner rather than later. The announcement of that support could be just days away. Reports suggest that during its WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple will announce new AI enhancements to iOS 18. We could also hear about an agreement between Apple and OpenAI to roll ChatGPT into Siri beginning with iOS 18.

The iPhone maker hasn’t been working on Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google’s Gemini. Instead, Apple has placed its focus on privacy-preserving on-device models. These could include improvements to transcription in built-in apps like Notes and AI-powered image editing options in Photos.

This choice means Apple would have to partner with another company to bring anything like ChatGPT to iOS. In fact, Apple’s AI chief John Giannandrea reportedly said in a 2023 email that “the last thing people needed was another chatbot.”

Reportedly, Apple has reached an agreement with OpenAI to bring chatbot functionality natively into iOS 18 and other operating systems in 2024. The supposition is that ChatGPT support would be baked into Siri, allowing users to access the LLM for searches and questions. This news, of course, runs contrary to earlier rumors that Apple would be bringing Google’s Gemini AI into Siri.

Today, if you ask Siri something that requires an internet search, Siri sends that query to Google using an anonymous identifier. If Apple and OpenAI start working together, Siri could instead pass that query on to the ChatGPT LLM. It would still us an anonymous identifier, preserving your privacy.

There are other ways rumors suggest Apple might include AI within iOS 18 and its other operating systems. AppleInsider was told the iPhone maker has been testing enhanced, more natural-sounding voices and text-to-speech improvements. Another possible enhancement would allow you to use Siri on your Apple Watch, for example, to play music on another device.

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference kicks off with the keynote on June 10. I expect we’ll learn a lot more then, and groovyPost will be here to tell you all about the news.

I agree apple has become a leader in payung for the inovation by others. No longer creat nothing notable, Steve is rolling in his grave, they are not the company he built. How much do you get paid to put a positive spin on this.
